Protecting your account and devices from phishing and malware is a top priority at Georgia Southern University. Many cyberattacks attempt to steal credentials or install malware through malicious email attachments.
Why We Block Certain Attachments
To safeguard students, faculty, and staff, Georgia Southern’s email system automatically blocks many high-risk file types that could contain malicious code. This is a standard practice across higher education and industry to reduce phishing and malware threats.
How the Process Works
- All incoming and outgoing email messages to or from Georgia Southern addresses are scanned for attachments.
- If an email contains a blocked file type, the attachment is removed and a notice is inserted into the message.
- This applies to messages sent by faculty, staff, students, and external senders.
Sharing Files Safely
If you need to share a legitimate file that is blocked, use a secure method like Google Drive to store and share files with proper access permissions.
Blocked File Types
In addition to file types blocked by Google, Georgia Southern also blocks the following:
.386, .3gr, .add, .ade, .asp, .bas, .crt, .dbx, .dll, .fon, .hlp, .inf, .ins, .js, .mdb, .msi, .ocx, .pcd, .reg, .shs, .url, .html
